I used to do a lot of work with UNIX, BASIC, some machine language, a little bit of work with C (more than 5 years for me…). Mostly, I’ve been doing database admin, statistical stuff, and fun junk like macros for the last… hrm-hrm years. I miss programming, and I want to update my skills a bit. I want to do some stuff with Java. I picked up a few books, but I think I need something (preferably short) that will give me an overview of OOP and a Java intro. The books I’ve got build on C++ knowledge, which I’ve never really worked with. There’s a gap there I need to bridge. Anybody have any suggestions?

“Think in Java” should be a good one for you. Please find it here: http://www.mindview.net/Books/TIJ/

The 3rd version is free, the 4th is not. But you can buy a printed copy of 3rd version too.

Thanks, libin. That was one I had looked at, but a couple of reviewers said it was written for those who had a strong knowledge of C++. I forgot that the older versions could be downloaded for free. It won’t cost anything to take a look!
